I like to read a lot. Mainly non-fiction. So I decided to do my own, personal book review of each book I read and then post it on the site. This way, interesting discussions might get triggered following each book! And this way we can broaden each other’s horizons on topics one never thought of even addressing.
So, to kick it off, I just finished reading a very interesting book, called “His Needs, Her Needs”, by Willard F. Harley.
Thanks TP for bringing me in touch with this book. Much appreciated!
No, I’m not a wussy who read girly books! I did go through a divorce more than a year ago and while reading this book, I could see all the mistakes we made that were actually not very difficult to avoid. So don’t make the same mistakes and read the book, hey!
So, what’s the book about? Harley identifies the 10 basic needs each and every individual has, that need to be fulfilled in a marriage (or any serious relationship for that matter). Each person, if asked to list these 10 needs in order of priority (for that individual), will list it differently. And that’s the tricky part - knowing which needs are priority for your partner and how to fill/fulfill them. Which, through the law of reciprocity, will mean that your own needs will get fulfilled.
For example, a man’s first basic need normally is Sexual Fulfilment (Amen!) For a woman it is Receiving Affection. Now, you won’t get your need fulfilled if you don’t fulfill your partner’s need first, and vice versa. Get it?
Harley goes on to give examples of each basic need and how to address/fulfill these. He also points out the inter-relatedness (i.e. if you don’t give affection, don’t expect any sex - you married men out there found this out the hard way, right!)
So, what’s my verdict on the book? Well, I think any person who is in a relationship (or will be), should read this book. I’ll give it a 3 out of 5, mainly because it sometimes feels a bit long-winded (Harley takes his time to prove each point), but it definitely is worth the read.
So get it from Kalahari.Net by clicking on the image above. You won’t regret it.
