MDC: No To Run-Off Poll

The opposition dismisses any prospectof a run-off poll - but Tsvangirai will go to Lusaka

Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change has re-stated its belief that it has gained overall victory in the Presidential election, and will not therefore take part in any run-off vote.

MDC Secretary General, Tendai Biti, speaking in South Africa, said the party had done even better than originally thought. He described Robert Mugabe as a “caretaker president”, and added: “So we are therefore concerned that an illegitimate government in now in place in Zimbabwe.”

Morgan Tsvangirai, the MDC leader, who was in Botswana yesterday as part of his campaign to win support from neighbouring nations, has said he will attend the emergency meeting of the 14-member SADC group in Lusaka, Zambia, tomorrow. Mugabe is also expected to attend.

Meanwhile in Zimbabwe itself two sinister developments have occurred, which observers believe are part of the ruling Zanu-PF party’s campaign to remain in power.

Zimbabwean Dollars

Bob, a middle-aged Zimbabwean tourist, visits the red light district of Johannesburg and enters a large brothel. It’s only his second time in Johannesburg. The Madam asks him to be seated and sends over a young lady over to entertain the prospective client. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she gasps and runs away!

Seeing this, the Madam sends over a more experienced lady over to entertain the gentleman. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit and she sits on his lap. He again whispers in her ear and she screams “No!” and walks quickly away!

The Madam decides that only the most experienced lady, Lola, would do!

Lola looks a bit tired, but there is nothing she hasn’t done already and absolutely nothing would surprise her. They sit and talk, frolic a little, giggle a bit, drink a bit and she sits on his lap. He whispers in her ear and she screams “No!” louder than the previous two smacks him as hard as she can and runs away!

Madam is by now, absolutely intrigued, having seen nothing like this in all her years of operating a brothel. She asks, “What did you want to do, to make them run away like that?”

Bob said: “I just asked if I can pay in Zimbabwean Dollars”.

Mugabe Defies Summit

Hopes that Zimbabwe’s neighbours would act to end its deepening crisis were dashed this morning when an all-night summit ended with a statement failing to acknowledge an emergency and calling only for the immediate release of election results.

Even that call looked toothless as Zimbabwe announced there would be a recount of results in 23 constituencies, 22 of them at the demand of Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu PF party.
